1st Sgt. George Gerald Palmer, USMC, Retired, 90, of Prosperity, widower of Marjory Ann Blake Palmer, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at White Oak Manor.
Born on July 21, 1933, in Martin, TN, he was a son of the late Jake and Reba Reeves Palmer.
Mr. Palmer was drafted in 1952 to the United States Marine Corps where he served an illustrious 25 year career. During his service he was deployed to multiple tours in Vietnam. He always demonstrated leadership and unwavering dedication to his country and fellow Marines.
Following retirement from the Marine Corps, he joined the police department where he continued to give unwavering dedication serving on the security detail at the Charleston Naval Base.
For nearly fifty years he volunteered for Toys for Tots. He contributed many hours each year helping to bring joy to countless children. His compassion for this project was immense.
He was a member of the Marine Corps League Detachment 803 and a volunteer at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center.
He attended Bethel Baptist Church in Prosperity.
Mr. Palmer is survived by sons, Philip (Karen) Palmer of Prosperity, John Thomas (Yonnie) Palmer of Wisconsin and Travis (Anita) Pigott of Charleston; a daughter, Mary (Wayne) Bostic of Georgia; a sister, Mary Jane (Bob) Carriger of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma ; brother, Larry Palmer and Tom (Peggy) Palmer both of Augusta, Kansas; ten grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, December 9, 2023, at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Mike Townsend. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial with military honors will be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at the Beaufort National Cemetery.
