Charlotte Presley Roseman, 91, and Henry Quay Roseman, 89, both of Newberry, SC, died 16 hours apart on Monday, April 20 and Tuesday, April 21, 2026, with their children by their side. They were married for over 62 years.

Charlotte, or “Mo” as she was called by her grandchildren, was born in Charlotte, NC, the fourth daughter of Charles Presley and Mamie Everett Presley. Charlotte graduated from O’Donoghue High School in Charlotte, NC, then earned her nursing degree from Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

Charlotte first made her mark as a pediatric nurse. When she would visit with her sister Emma Lou, her three nieces would enthusiastically greet her as she arrived in her latest convertible and sit around the kitchen table as she taught them about her world in nursing. She was brilliant and entertaining; a very bright light to her three little nieces. What no one realized then was what a pioneer in the nursing field she would become.

Charlotte started her nursing profession at the Watauga Hospital in Boone, NC in the early 60’s. After completing her training to become a CRNA at the NC Baptist School of Anesthesia in Winston Salem, she helped establish what is now the current University of South Carolina School of Medicine Nurse Anesthesia Training Program, which was then located at the old Columbia Hospital. Charlotte served as the Columbia Hospital program’s first director, helping the program move through the accreditation process in 1969. The program became part of Richland Memorial Hospital in 1972, when the new facility replaced Columbia Hospital. She was proud of how the program helped to fill a need with nurse anesthetists when there were not enough anesthesiologists. After years working at Richland, she moved to the VA Hospital in Columbia, where she retired in the late 1990s.

Quay, or “Pop” as he was called by his grandchildren, was born in Statesville, NC. He helped on the family farm, often riding bareback on a horse to round up the cows. He had many interests as a young man, including playing basketball on his school team, playing guitar, and acting in plays.

Quay graduated from Celeste Henkel School in Statesville, NC, then served in the US Army in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg from 1956-59. He then graduated from Mitchell College in 1962. He went on to earn his BS in Social Sciences from Appalachian State in 1964 and his Masters in Teaching Social Science from Appalachian State. While in Boone, he acted in 'Horn in the West', an outdoor drama produced every summer since 1952 in the Daniel Boone Amphitheater, the oldest revolutionary war drama in the United States.

Quay spent two years teaching at Conway High School, then moved on to be the Title 1 Coordinator of Research and Development in the Chesterfield County School System District 1. Later Quay moved to the Department of Education as a Project Supervisor for the State Superintendent of Education in Columbia, SC, then finished out his career in education at the Department of Corrections Headquarters, where he retired in the mid 90s.

Quay and Charlotte always had a love for life. In their earlier years, they took up golf and loved to go camping with their friends. They both earned their private pilots license and bought a Piper Cherokee 180. They would fly to visit the farm in Statesville with their infant daughter, buzzing the house to let Quay’s parents know to ride over to pick them up at the airstrip.

In their later years, Quay and Charlotte stayed active with travel, boating on Lake Murray, and attending the theatre with their friends as often as possible. They were huge Gamecock fans, attending every home football game with their children and grandchildren, and traveled to many bowl games.

However, their biggest joy was their children and grandchildren. As parents, they supported all of their children’s interests and dreams, from coaching their sports teams, attending matches, building treehouses and even a half-pipe for skateboarding, encouraging and supporting their daughter living overseas and their son traveling around the country with a band. Most importantly, they always made sure their children knew they were loved.

Quay was known as a man who could fix anything, and would drop everything to help a friend or a stranger. Charlotte was an excellent friend who loved a good party, and loved the Christmas season. They cherished time with their grandchildren at their beach house and their pool, Pop making endless milkshakes for all.

Quay and Charlotte are survived by their daughter, Leslie Roseman Layton and her husband Steve; son, Steven Quay Roseman, grandchildren, Daniel Layton and his wife Sarah, Will Layton and his fiancée Summer, Luke Layton and his fiancée Logan, Laura Layton, Hunter Roseman, and Lilli Roseman, a great-grandson Callan Layton, and a great-granddaughter on the way. They are also survived by many nieces and nephews and other extended family in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Colorado.

Their family is comforted in the fact that Charlotte and Quay were Christians and this separation from them is only temporary. Charlotte and Quay were members of St. Jude Episcopal Church in Columbia, St. Simon and St. Jude Episcopal Church in Irmo, then St. Francis Episcopal in Chapin, and finally after their move to Newberry, Holy Trinity Lutheran in Little Mountain.

A graveside service led by Pastor Randy Drafts will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church at 1pm on May 2, 2026, followed by a reception immediately after at the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Steve. All of their friends and family are invited to come.

The family would like to thank Three Oaks Hospice, especially Caitlin, Kiera, and Kelonda, McLeod Home Care caregivers, especially Jenny, Abigail, and Panna, and their private caregiver Kathy.

In memory of Charlotte and Quay, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Breakthrough T1D, Formerly JDRF, PO Box 5042 Hagerstown, MD 21741-5042, or your local animal shelter.
