Frances H. Wood

Franc e s H . Wood ( Fran), 77, of Columbia passed away September 15, 2013 at her home in Gardendale. Born in Newberry , South Carolina . she was the daughter o f Elizabe t h L o m i nick Hayes a nd the late John Earl Hayes . Fran grew up in Newberry and graduated f r om Newberry High School Class of 1954. She earned her undergraduate degree from W inthrop College and her Masters Degree f r om the University of South Carolina .

Fr a n was a devoted science teacher for 30 years, having taught in Rock Hill District Three and L ex ington Dis t rict Five . She was awarded Teacher of the Year in Lex i ngton District Five in 19 8 5.

Sh e loved to travel and led groups from Virginia Wingard Church on trips to Israel. Canada , A u stralia , New Zealand, England, Ireland, France, Greece, Rome, on r i ver trips in Europe a long the Rhine, Main, and Danube, and to many places in the United States.

A life l ong Christian , Fran loved her church and spent many hours on the visitation program and m i s s i on trips serving others . She was elected Virginia Wingard United Methodist Woman of the Ye a r in 1996 and 2012.

T he loves of her life were sewing, quilting, knitting, and water color painting , She spent many l on g hour s on these hobbies, teaching others . and making quilts and other items to be given to t ho s e i n need or to honor and comfort the infirmed. .

She is s urv iv ed by her husband o f 56 years . John Wood of Columbia ; a son Frank Wood (Susan) of S a l u da , a n d daughter, Nan E l izabeth Lanier (Timothy) of Columbia; three grandchildren , Au st in Wood (Jess i e), Brandon Lanier and Jam i e Lanier; one great-grandch i ld , CallaWood ; her mo t he r ; and a b r other. John E . Hayes (Mary Ann) of Newberry.

A Celebration of her Life will be held Wed n esday , September 18, at 11:00 a.m , at Virginia Wingard Memori a l United Methodist Church , Columbia, South Carolina , followed by a r e c e pt i on and visita t ion, Burial will be in Newberry Memorial Garden at 3 : 00 p.m ,

In lieu of flowers , gifts may be made t o the Fran Wood Quilters at Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church, 150 0 Broad River Road, Columbia , SC 292 1 0 .
