George William Wicker, 91, of Newberry, passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2009.

Mr. Wicker was born on October 6, 1918, in Newberry where he was reared and lived and worked most of his life. He considered it an honor to serve his country during World War II in Europe. He also served in various services including CC Camp and the National Guard.

Mr. Wicker married his sweetheart, Evelyn King when he returned home from the war. They reared two daughters, Pat and Helen in their hometown of Newberry while working at Mollohon Mill. In later years, after the passing of his wife, he moved to Rock Hill, SC to be near his oldest daughter. He was preceded in death by his father, Pettus and his mother, Minnie and his step-mother, Ruby. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Lonnie, Earl, Lake and Julian Wicker and a sister, Josephine Cassady.

Surviving are his daughters, Pat Williams of Rock Hill and Helen Gilbert of Newberry; sisters, Rebecca Brown of Knoxville, TN and Peggy Cromer of Columbia; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews in the South Carolina area.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at Glenn Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Mike Whitesides. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.
