Gertie West Donald, 90, of Newberry, died Friday, September 11, 2009 at J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home.

Born on October 12, 1918 in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Burnest Hampton and Ella Gertrude Baker Wilson. She enjoyed being a homemaker and caring for her many family members and friends. She formerly worked in the finance business. She was a member of Newberry First Baptist Church and enjoyed helping in the church where she was a member of WMU Callie Thomas Group and a former Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Donald was a member of the Women of the Moose, was a volunteer with the American Red Cross and Girl Scouts.

Surviving are sons, Billye Lee (Peggie) West and Robin Moore (Diane) West of Newberry and Dean (Sue) Davis of Mansfield, TX; grandchildren, Cindy and Bart Merchant, Johnette and Paul Shealy, Debbie and Jimmy Berley, Ginny and Mike Comer, Joe West, Johnny West, Randy West, Gerta West, Marsha West, Bunny West, Misty West, Brandy West, Tiffany West, Billye II and Debra West, Sabin and Christy West and Ashley Berry and a number of great-grandchildren. She was married to the late J.B. West and the late Lake Donald and was predeceased by sons, Ross Calvin West and John Burnest “Bunny” West.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 14, 2009 at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials First Baptist Church Building Fund, 1020 Boundary Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or to the American Red Cross, 2751 Bull Street, Columbia, SC 29201.
