Harriet Bowers Bruner, 98, of Newberry, SC, died Monday, March 5, 2018 at Springfield Place. She was the wife of the late Robert R. Bruner for 39 years until his death in 1979.

Born in Fitzgerald, GA on June 15, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Hattie and Samuel B. Bowers. She attended Newberry College, was married, and in the following years was a homemaker, raising three children. Harriet was an avid reader, seamstress, gardener, and a fantastic cook. Her preferred pastime was playing cards, with Bridge and Shanghai being her favorites. She was a founding member of the Friday afternoon Bridge Club, and rarely missed a game in 70 years. As a member of Central United Methodist church, she served on many committees through the years. Harriet was also a member of the Newberry Garden Club.

Survivors include a son, Robert R. Bruner, III (Dianne) of Gulf Breeze, FL and a daughter, Betsy B. Taylor (Wallace) of Augusta, GA. She was predeceased by her daughter, Anne Griffith Utley, one sister, and three brothers. Additional survivors include six grandchildren, Leanne Griffith, Honorable E. C. Griffith, Jr., Laney Bruner-Canhoto (Alfredo), Robert R. Bruner, IV, Robert W. Taylor, Jr. (Beverly), and Harriet T. Clement (Mark) , and ten great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Debera Scarborough for her dedication, love, and care of Harriet over the last twelve years.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Central United Methodist Church in Newberry, SC on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 11:00 am. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the church in Henry Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Central United Methodist Church Parsonage Fund, PO Box 67, Newberry, SC 29108.
