Irene Creed Mount, 98, died Friday, April 17, 2009 , at Jesse Frank Hawkins Nursing Home in Newberry , South Carolina . She was born on February 18, 1911 , in De Ridder , Louisiana , the daughter of Thomas Lonzo and Hattie Smith Creed. Mrs. Mount was for fifty-three years the wife of the late James Fred Mount.

They made their home first in Port Arthur, Texas, then in Charleston, South Carolina, and finally in Bennettsville, South Carolina, where Mrs. Mount's husband died. In 1997, she moved to Newberry to be nearer her family.

Wherever she lived, "Mrs. Irene" was an active and devoted church member and a caring friend and neighbor. In Bennettsville, she belonged to First United Methodist Church and in Newberry she belonged to Central United Methodist Church , where she was a member of the Ezell Bible Class and Circle 4 of the United Methodist Women. She was an avid reader and a lover of flowers.

Mrs. Mount is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. And Mrs. Gerald (Jerry & Jackie) Mount of Pomaria, by her four grandchildren: Jana (Jeff) Paschal and Jill (Ken) Longshore of Pomaria, Jimmy (Dedra) Mount and Jonathan Mount of Irmo, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by a niece. Joan Norris Hopson, of Lufkin , Texas , and was predeceased by a sister, Elsie Creed Norris of Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2009 , at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Karen Radcliffe and Rev. Dr. Marion Crooks. Visitation will be from 10:00 – 10:30 a.m. at Henry Hall at Central United Methodist Church . Committal services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Park in Bennettsville. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church , PO Box 67 , Newberry , SC 29108 or to First United Methodist Church of Bennettsville, PO Box 456 , Bennettsville , SC 29512 .
