Dr. James William "Bill" Pugh, 77, of Prosperity, widower of Anna Carolyn May Pugh, died Sunday, April 29, 2018, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born on October 31, 1940, in Prosperity, he was a son of the late Robert Wayne and Ruth Stockman Pugh. He was a Navy veteran and a graduate of Newberry College and Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Dr. Pugh had a private medical practice for a number of years and during that time was Chief of Staff at South Fulton Hospital. During his career he also gave care at other facilities in the state of Georgia. He was a member of the American Association of Family Physicians and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Douglasville, GA. At the time of his death he had proudly celebrated thirty years of sobriety. Dr. Pugh lovingly cared for his wife of 48 years through her many years of struggle with Frontotemporal Dementia until her death in 2014.

He is survived by daughters, Meredith Claire Pugh and her husband, Oliver de la Paz of Holden, MA and Sarah Suzanne Pugh of Oakland, CA; a sister, Lynda and her husband, Jimmy Counts of Prosperity and grandchildren, Lucas de le Paz, Nolan de le Paz and Henry de le Paz. Dr. Pugh was predeceased by his siblings, Betty Pugh Caughman, Cora Pugh Price and Robert Wayne Pugh, Jr.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Prosperity Cemetery by the Rev. Jimmy Counts. Memorials may be made to the ALS Research at the ALS Association Gift Processing Center, PO Box 37022, Boone, IA 50037-0022.

Active pallbearers will be former high school classmates.  They are John V. Pugh, Tobie Shealy, Enoch Boozer, Bobby Bedenbaugh and John Fulmer.
