James Leland Waters, 76, of Newberry, died peacefully on Monday, July 20, 2020, with his family by his side.

He was born January 18, 1944 in Newberry to the late John Bennie and Lillie Hawkins Waters. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Mr. Waters retired from GoldKist (Southern States), Coleman Oil and farmed all of his life. He had a passion for flowers and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mickey Barnette Waters; sons, Bobby (Leanne) Waters and Brad (Melodie) Waters; grandchildren, Loren W. (Will) Cook, Brett Waters, Allie Waters, Lillie Waters and Mollie Waters; a great-granddaughter, Raine Cook; sisters, Betty W. (Billy) Schumpert, Frances W. Gresham (Tommy) Connelly; a brother, Earl (Betty Lou) Waters; sisters-in-law, Dale Barnette and Tina (David) Hatch and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Dorothy W. Hawkins and Bennie Lou W. Shealy, a brother, Frank Waters and two infant sons, Leland Barnette Waters and Michael Waters.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jimmy Counts. Family and friends may stop by McSwain-Evans Funeral Home between the hours of 10:30 am and 5:00 pm Tuesday to sign the guest register and view Mr. Waters. in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, church or the charity of one's choice. Those attending the service are reminded of the COVID 19 social distancing requirements and those attending are also invited to bring umbrellas for personal shade.

Active pallbearers will be Tee Bartley, Mac Bartley, Jerry Cohen, Brett Waters, Will Cook and Gary Kraynock.
