Joy Cox Harmon, 74, of Irmo, died Friday, December 3, 2021 at Prisma Health Baptist Parkridge.

Born on March 6, 1947 in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late James Jefferson and Mary Ruth Rogers Cox. She was a graduate of Furman University. She retired from the Newberry County School District, where she taught Spanish and English. She was the organist at First Baptist Church in Newberry for 30 years. She served as a Sunday School teacher, choir leader, Vacation Bible School teacher. She was active with many mission groups and served on many mission trips.

Joy was known for her infectious laughter. She deeply loved her Lord, her family, her friends, and many others. She was also a prayer warrior and constantly prayed for people and their needs. She had a wonderful musical talent with a beautiful singing voice and played gorgeous music on both the piano and organ.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Dr. Kenneth W. Harmon; a daughter, Merri Christy Tolar and her husband, Jeffrey of Irmo; a son, Stewart J. Harmon and his wife, Adele of Chapin; grandchildren, Jeff Harmon, Wesley Harmon, Garrett Harmon, Laurel Tolar, and Arden Tolar.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday, December 6, 2021 at the First Baptist Church of Newberry by the Rev. Dr. Albert Allen and Rev. J. Thomas Randall. The Interment will be held at 3:30 PM Monday at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood Glendale Road, Spartanburg, 29307. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 4:00 until 6:00 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions, 1020 Boundary Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Active pallbearers will be Stewart Harmon, Jeff Harmon, Dennis Harmon, Jeffrey Tolar, William Tolar, and Steve Crocker.
