Martha Edith Counts, 88, of Prosperity died Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Generations in Chapin.

Born on January 17, 1930 in Prosperity, she was a daughter of the late Horace Enos Counts, Sr. and Mable McWaters Counts. Martha was a 1951 graduate of Newberry College and earned a Medical Technology degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. She retired as the Director of Laboratory at Georgia Regional Hospital in Savannah. An active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Prosperity helping in any way she could, she was a former member of Faith Lutheran Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Savannah, GA. She served as the church crucifer for many years. Martha was a member of the order of the Eastern Star. An avid woodcarver and artist, Martha also had an incredible love for children and for animals. Asked how she wanted to be remembered she responded that she wished to be known for her kindness, helpfulness, and honesty.

She is survived by a sister, Betty Counts Alexander of Homestead, FL; 2 nieces, Jan Allen of Canton, GA and Kay Luckey of Custer Park, IL; Godchildren, Raymond Edward Luckey and Charles Fredrick (Cindy) Hart and son Freddy; dear friends who knew her as “BaBa” Hansel (Leigh) Hart and daughters, Christine and Kathryn. She was predeceased by a brother, Horace Enos Counts, Jr.; a sister, Christine Ohlhues; and a dear lifelong friend, Polly Hart.

The family would like to thank the Staff of Generations and Heartstrings Hospice for their care.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, August 12, 2018 at Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. Michael Price. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. A private burial will take place in Prosperity Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, PO Box 188, Prosperity, SC 29127 or to Homeward Bound Pet Rescue, PO Box 4335, Irmo, SC 29063.
