Mathilde Suber Smith ,92, widow of James Mark Smith, of Newberry died Saturday, November 26, 2022 at Newberry Memorial Hospital. 

Born on June 4, 1930 in Pomaria, she was a daughter of the late Willie J. Suber Sr. and Edna Leitzsey Suber. Mathilde was a graduate of Pomaria High School and a graduate of Newberry College. She was a long-time member of the Lutheran Church of The Redeemer. Mathilde's outdoor hobbies were maintaining a backyard vegetable garden for nearly seventy years and working in her yard. She loved to cook her vegetables for family and friends and will be long remembered for her big Sunday meals.  

Mrs. Smith is survived by her sons, Dale (Rita) Smith of Lexington SC and Vernon Smith of Pomaria; sisters-in-law Helen Suber, Dollie Hallman and Barbara Smith and brothers-in-law Dan Sandel and Raymond Smith and many nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents and husband of 57 years, she was predeceased by infant daughter Miriam Edna Smith; sisters Ethel Smith, Cornelia Long, Elizabeth Berley, and Marie Sandel; brothers Jacob Suber and Tommie Suber; sister-in-law Katie Suber; brothers-in-laws Thomas Smith, Pat Long, Harvey Berley, and a special niece Elaine Smith Story.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, November 29, 2022 by the Reverend Mathew Titus at Newberry Memorial Gardens.
