Richard D. “Dick” Morton, 94 of Newberry, widower of Dorothy Burke Morton, died Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at his residence.

Born on June 13, 1927 in Dallas, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Ruth Daxie and Cora Katherine Blanton Morton.

Mr. Morton was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He was a life long learner, and earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Limestone College. Richard was a retired Textile Engineer with Oakland Mill and a member of First Baptist Church in Newberry where he was a former Deacon. He was a Mason, a Gideon and a former member of the Rotary Club of Newberry, and served as a Scout Master for a number of years. Richard loved reading and enjoyed exercising, as he would walk 5 miles everyday. Mr. Morton loved taking care of his animals and growing vegetables in his garden. He never met anyone that he did not like and everyone that met him liked him too.

He is survived by a son, Don (Elizabeth) Morton of Columbia; daughters, Gwen Morton of Columbia and her godchildren, Zabeian and Kimberly Green, and Sam (Bill Shackelford) Morton of Bryson City, N.C.; a sister, Nollie Clemmer; a brother, Gene Morton; grandchildren, Forrest (Kellyn) Morton, Katy Shackelford, Emily Morton, and Rob Morton; and a great-grandchild, Elwen Morton. He was predeceased by 6 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Albert Allen. Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 until 7:30 pm at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Relocation Fund, 1020 Boundary Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Active pall bearers will be Curtis Dominick, Jim Edwards, Rob Morton, Forrest Morton, Vard Clemmer, and Bill Shackelford.
