Roger Edward Long, Sr., 73, of Prosperity, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Prisma Health Richland.

Born on November 7, 1952, in Newberry County, he was a son of the late James Leland and Mary Ruth Boland Long. Roger was a graduate of Newberry College and served fifteen years in the South Carolina National Guard where he was in the National Guard Band. He was a “jack of all trades” and accomplished many things in his lifetime. Upon graduation from college he was a band director for one year, operated Jimmy’s Service Station, was a carpenter, was a stump grinder and was a band member with Fresh Air and Change of Heart for many years. While a member of the bands he was able to travel to many destinations playing top 40 music and beach music.

He was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Mid Carolina Country Club. His loves in life were golfing, fishing, playing music and old cars.

Roger is survived by his wife, Barbara Sligh Long; a son, Eddie (Cindy) Long of Newberry; a daughter, Jamie (Tim) Long of Roanoke, VA and a granddaughter, Lucy Lutterman. He was predeceased by a sister, Rosemary Metts and brothers, Kenny Long and Don Long.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Young Life of Newberry (SC 57), 1211 Calhoun Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

The family will hold a private service later.
