Emma “Ruth” Butler Christensen, 102, of Newberry, South Carolina died Saturday, August 10, 2019, at White Oak Manor.

Born on December 6, 1916, in Augusta, Georgia, Ruth was the daughter of the late David Marion and Eddie Clark Rheney Butler. Ruth and her family moved to Miami, Florida in 1927 and in 1935 she married Henry A. Christensen. A few years later, she and her family moved to New York State before returning to Miami and then moving to Fort Myers. Ruth worked for the Lee County School Board District as a school bus driver and in local school offices in various roles. She also was a real estate broker for several years. Ruth was an active person and was always eager to do something. She was a member of North Fort Myers Methodist Church and Cypress Lake Methodist Church, where she was involved in many church activities. She loved playing cards and was in a bowling league for many years. Her husband passed away in 1991 and her son, James passed away in 2001. She lived with her son, John, for many years and they moved to South Carolina in 2013 to be near her daughter, Shirley.

Ruth is survived by her son, John Christensen of Irmo; her daughter, Shirley Mohler of Newberry; her granddaughter, Trina (Scott) Reisch; her great-grandson, Samuel Reisch; step-grandchildren Kathy (Doug) Wicker and Burt (Lynn) Mohler; step-great-grandchildren, Caroline Reisch, Jonathan Reisch, Shawn Wicker, Devin Price, Sarah Mohler, Laura Mohler and Noah Mohler. She was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm Saturday, August 17, 2019, at the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of Newberry by the Reverend Seth Yi. Memorial contributions may be made to the church for the benefit of the School Backpack Program, 1701 Main Street, Newberry, South Carolina 29108.
