Samuel Jacob “S.J.” Ruff, age 92, of Newberry, died Friday, May 15, 2020 at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.

S.J. was born May 29, 1927. He was the son of the late L.W. and Grace Banks Ruff of Newberry. He attended Newberry High School. S.J. served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He worked at Savannah River Plant for many years. He owned and operated Ruff's Marine Center and in winter season he planted trees for Champion International. After selling his business in 1987, he continued with tree planting and also had several other odd jobs that kept him busy. He was a member of Epting Memorial United Methodist Church and also Amity Lodge 887 in Newberry. In November 2018, he was presented with his 60 year Masonic pin.

He was predeceased by his late wife, Grace Attaway Ruff, daughter, Jan. R. Sizemore of Gloverville. He was also predeceased by a brother, Marvin Ruff and brother-in-law, Marion Mack

Surviving are his sister, Frances R. Mack of Newberry and his brother, Mitchell (Peggy) Ruff of Newberry; a daughter, Kim (Randy) Bradfield of Prosperity; a son-in-law, Terry Sizemore of Gloverville; grandchildren, Kevin (Leigh) Bradfield of Summerville, Kristen (Nate) Nickel of Columbia, Jennifer Herrin Sarmento of North Charleston. He has three great-grandchildren, Brooke Walker of North Charleston, Hayes Bradfield and Caroline Bradfield of Summerville and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Ms. Lisa Long, all of the staff of J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home and Springfield Place and also the staff of MSA Hospice for the wonderful care given to him.

Due to COVID 19, a graveside service with Masonic Rites will be held at Newberry Memorial Gardens on Sunday, May 17, 2020 at 3:00 pm conducted by the Rev. William Hightower. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Epting Memorial United Methodist Church, 1401 Milligan Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or to the charity of one's choice.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Dominick, Dean Mack, Cory Mack, Mike Ruff and Curtis Ruff.
