1SG William (Bill) Shermont Gambrell, United States Army Retired, 92, stepped into the presence of our Lord on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 with his family tending him in his home in Little Mountain, South Carolina. Bill was a Veteran of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening and fishing. An outdoor celebration of his life, or as he requested, “a party,” will be planned in the Spring for family and friends to gather to remember him.
Bill was born September 17, 1927 in Clinton, South Carolina. He was the son of Althea Blankenship and Ottis L. Foster, and the late Floyd Gambrell. In addition to his loving parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Johnson Gambrell; son-in-law, James Dean; Great-Grandson, Lon Gambrell, III; sisters, Margaret Blumer, Lena Motelle Epting, Ruby Basden, and Ruth Davis; brothers, Carl Gambrell and Jack Gambrell.
1SG Gambrell is survived by his four children, Lon (Dorothy) Gambrell of Whitmire, Sherry (Robert) Waters of Prosperity, Belinda Dean of Chapin, and Catherine (Lawrence) Russell of Little Mountain. He was loved by his 9 grandchildren, 19 great- grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
