Mr. Wilton Robert “Bill” Elrod, Jr., 92, of Newberry, SC died peacefully September 9, 2017, at Warriors Walk Inpatient Hospice Facility, Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, SC.

Mr. Elrod was born September 20, 1924 in Easley, SC, a son of the late Wilton Elrod, Sr. and Rosa Coward Elrod. He was a member of College Street Baptist Church. He retired from Oakland Textile Mill. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during World War II in addition to serving in the Newberry National Guard until his retirement. While his health permitted, he loved camping, casting a fishing line at Lake Murray or at the beach fishing off a pier and pulling in a “Big One!”

Survivors include one son, Timothy Robert (Linda) Elrod of Gilbert; three daughters, Vicky E. (Larry) Kyzer of Orangeburg, Cheryl L. Elrod of Lexington and Dina E. (Bill) Mangum of Camden; eight grandchildren, Misti K. Jurecki of Charleston, Brian J. (Lori) Elrod of West Columbia, Lindsay E. (Randy) Arant of Lexington, Kurtlin M. (Ayzia) Taylor of Lugoff, Zachary T. (Shayla) Taylor and Ashton T. (Joseph) Reese of Columbia, Carrie Deanne & Joshua A. Elrod of Lexington; eight great-grandchildren, Gabe & Caleb Jurecki of Charleston, Elliott & Eva Elrod of West Columbia, Ryder & AnnMaesyn Arant of Lexington, Ainzley & McKenna Taylor of Lugoff; two sisters, Pansy E. Perkins of Newberry and Joan E. Ward of Winter Park, Florida. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Sadie Schumpert Elrod, a brother, Troy Elrod and two sisters, Christine Sessoms and Bethel E. Mazza.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel in Newberry, SC with the Rev. Chad Asby, Pastor of College Street Baptist Church officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 - 2:30 pm at the funeral home prior to the service.Burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Freedom and Hope Foundation, 598 Hollands Landing Road, Prosperity, SC 29127 or to College Street Baptist Church, 3240 College Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Active pallbearers will be Brian Elrod, Kurtlin Taylor, Zach Taylor, Joseph Reese, Kenny Mazza, Larry Mazza and Ross Sessoms.

Our family would like to extend a special heartfelt thanks to the Warriors Walk staff at Dorn VA Medical Hospice Wing for the excellent care they provided. We give God the glory for placing our Dad and our family into your loving care for the final weeks of his life.
