Ray Hartley

Ray Edward Hartley, 85, of Newberry, died Saturday, September 10, 2011, at White Oak Manor.

Born on September 5, 1926, in Lenoir, NC, he was a son of the late Christopher and Rosa Sigmon Hartley. He was the owner of Jalapa Upholstery Service and a U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Hartley loved gardening, hiking, camping, canoeing, traveling and sail boating.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel Gragg Hartley and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Tuesday at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Brian Preston. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens . Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3225 Sunset Blvd, Suite 100, West Columbia, SC 29169, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38101-9929 or to Bush River Baptist Church, 8935 Bush River Road, Newberry, SC 29108 or to Fairview Baptist Church, 4433 Indian Creek Road, Kinards, SC 29355.

Ms. Mabel -- We are so sorry to learn of Ray's death, and want you to know that our prayers and thoughts are with you. I remember the many occasions when you all did upholstery work for our family, and I would always have to play piano for you when you brought the furniture back! May God bless!
