Vernon Garrett

Vernon Von Garrett, 88, of Newberry, widower of Peggy Sligh Harmon Garrett, died Saturday, December 29, 2018 at White Oak Manor.

Born September 5, 1930 in Prosperity, he was a son of the late Ernest and Sparta Nichols Garrett. He was a retired carpenter and attended Cannon's Creek Prosperity ARP Church.

Mr. Garrett is survived by a step-daughter, Dianne (Larry) Bundrick of Newberry; a sister, Betty Dominick of Prosperity; grandchildren, Kenneth (Aubrie) Bundrick and Johnny (Mindy) Bundrick; five great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Peggy Garrett, Doris White and Annie (David) Livingston, brother-in-law, John (Evelyn) Rankin and nieces and nephews including special nieces, Lynn Perry and Jane Bickley. He was predeceased by siblings, Zilla Inman, Pearl Garrett, Sara Fite, Faye Turner, Lois Rawl, John Garrett, Robert Garrett and George Garrett.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at Cannon's Creek Prosperity ARP Church Cemetery by the Rev. Brett Blackman. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Bundrick, 28 Peggy Court (1461 Colony Church Road).  Memorials may be made to the church at 14417 C.R. Koon Highway, Newberry, SC 29108 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 140 Stoneridge Drive, Suite 210, Columbia, SC 29210.

Active pallbearers will be Steve Dominick, Henry Dominick, Keith Rankin, Bud Koon, Clayton Epting and Charles Perry.

Cheryl Starnes

Cheryl Shealy Starnes, 69, of Prosperity,widow of Ronald Wayne Starnes, died peacefully at home on Friday, December 28, 2018.

Born on November 25, 1949, in Newberry she was a daughter of the late Andrew Fritz and Elizabeth Griffith Shealy. She was the retired Director of the Newberry County Chamber of Commerce and a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

She was the loving mother of Andrew (Amber) Starnes of Charlotte, NC, Michael (Pamela) Starnes of Sitka, AK and Kelley (Jason) Booth of Santa Cruz, CA. She is also survived by a sister, Andrea (Ralph) Lewis of Prosperity, brothers, Wendell (Linda) Shealy of Surfside Beach and Philip (Vickie) Shealy of Little Mountain and her grandchildren that she adored, Jackson Booth, Harper Booth and Ron Starnes.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, December 31, 2018 at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Newberry County Library, 1100 Friend Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Miriam Hawkins

Miriam Fulmer Hawkins, 86, of Prosperity, widow of James Clyde Hawkins, died Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at the Saluda Nursing Center.

Born on October 28, 1932 in Prosperity, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Samuel Fulmer, Sr. and Grace Shealy Fulmer. Mrs. Hawkins worked for many years at Old School Manufacturing and with American Greetings. She was a life-long member of Macedonia Lutheran Church where she was very active in the Adult Sunday School Class, the Senior Choir, the Fellowship Circle, the Goldies, the Lakeshore Linedancers and the Macedonia Quilters.

She is survived by her children, Edith Hawkins, Gail (Joel) Black and Patrick (Melanie) Hawkins; grandchildren, Joshua (Shannon) Black, Lauren Black and fiance, Steven Venegas, Claire Hawkins and Ben Hawkins; great-grandchildren, Ana Black and Tyra Black; brothers, Robert (Helen) Fulmer and Monroe (Juanita) Fulmer; sisters-in-law, Judy (Joe) Kesler and Linda Pitts. Mrs. Hawkins was predeceased by a daughter, Pamela Susan Hawkins and a brother, Herbert Samuel Fulmer, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Macedonia Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Macedonia Church Choir Robe Fund, 49 Macedonia Church Road, Prosperity, SC 29127.

Active pallbearers will be Jason Fulmer, Grady Fulmer, Charles Fulmer, Ernie Fulmer, Billy Pitts, Paul Shealy, Billy Caldwell and Russell Pitts.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Macedonia Goldies.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of the Saluda Nursing Center units A & B as well as Dr. William Sawyer for their loving care to Miriam.

Steve Morris

Steve Allen Morris, 69 of Prosperity, died Thursday, December 27, 2018 at J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.

Born in Newberry, on June 23, 1949, he was a son of the late Herman and Hester Lee Hendrix Morris. He retired from the City of Newberry and was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. Steve loved fishing and playing golf. He enjoyed playing music and taking trips to the mountains.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Morris; a son, Terry (Kathy) Morris of Prosperity; step-children, Karen, Donnie, Frankie, and Kerry; a grandson, Michael Allen Morris; step-grandchildren, Ashley Swygert, Michael Murphy, Amber Shealy, Brittany Farrington, Brandon Shealy, Cryastal Shealy, Stephanie Shealy, and Eric Shealy; many step-great-grandchildren; and a special nephew Anthony (Missy) Dennis. He was predeceased by sisters, Diane Dennis and Annette Morris, and by a brother, Marvin “Red”Morris.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, December 30, 2018 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jimmy Counts.  Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home.  Memorials may be made to the Newberry County Humane Society, PO Box 485, Newberry, SC 29108. The family is at the home of Ashley Swygert, 1100 Timberwood Trail, Newberry.

Richard Mason

 

 

 

 

Richard Burnett Mason, age 81, passed away on Sunday, December 23, at Springfield Place in Newberry, SC. Originally from High Point, North Carolina, he is predeceased by his parents, Burnett Mason, of Cocoa, FL and by C. Virginia (Kitty) Silman Mason.

Richard is survived by his former wives, Jo Ann Sowers Mason, of Union, SC, and Rita Laxton Harmon Mason, of Spartanburg, SC. He is also survived by his children: Richard (Rick) Mason, Jr. and wife, Janet, of Forest City, NC; Leigh A. Ringer and husband, Cecil, of Boiling Springs, SC; Carol A. Martin, and husband, Chris, of Charleston, SC; and Julie M. Goley and husband, Rick, of N. Augusta, SC; and Brent Harmon and wife, Joanne, of Greer, SC. He is likewise survived by his grandchildren--Meredith Mason Street, and husband, Austin, of Forest City, NC; Mary Hope Martin, Walker Martin, and Harrison Martin of Charleston, SC; and Thomas Goley of N. Augusta, SC; and one beautiful great-granddaughter, Gabriella Harmon, of Greer, SC.

Richard, or 'Rick', as many knew him, received his BS degree in Business Administration from High Point College, where he was a member of the PIKA fraternity. In college, he joined the US Army, where he was a veteran of eight years in the Army Reserves and in the National Guard. He enjoyed a long career in textile management, employed by Greensboro Manufacturing, and in more recent years by Skyland Textiles in Forest City, NC, followed by Her Majesty, Inc. in Union, SC. In latter years, he also worked as a small business realtor/broker for Sun Belt Properties in Spartanburg, SC.

In his adolescent years, Richard became involved in Soap Box Derby racing in High Point, NC, winning Derbys in Winston-Salem and High Point, and eventually won his way to the National Championship in Akron, OH. Music and drama were his favorite pastimes. He was in choirs both at school and in churches. In college, he sang bass with "The Garnets" quartet. As an adult, he was in numerous musical dramas at Isothermal Community College and in Union. He was a lover and semi-expert of 50's music, old cars and NC style BBQ. He was first a member of the United Methodist faith, and later the Southern Baptist faith.

A private memorial service will be held in the chapel of McSwain-Evans Funeral Home in Newberry, SC on Monday, December 24, 2018at 10:00 am Burial of cremains will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in High Point, NC at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Lighthouse Hospice, 110 Oak Park Drive, Unit C in Irmo, SC 29063; High Point University, 1 University Parkway in High Point, NC 27268; or to the ministry or charity of ones' choice.
